Umbrellas, as useful as they may be, can also be a real drag in the city – particularly on crowded urban streets or when your hands are full. On a rainy day in the city it can be a nightmare to avoid getting poked in the eye or tangled up in the gaggle of umbrellas clogging the sidewalks.
Greece-based Studio NL’s Athanasia Leivaditou has come up with a simple solution to the umbrella entanglement problem. The Umbrella-Coat, a recent recipient of a Silver A’Design Award in Fashion and Jewellery Design, combines a raincoat, an umbrella and waterproof trousers.
“Depending on the weather conditions and the amount of rain it can be adjusted to different protections,” explains the designer’s website.
A simple yet perfect urban design solution that would also help to eliminate the millions of cheaply made umbrellas that end up in the landfill after being destroyed during bad weather.
