Six Flags: Red To Green

E-mail Print

Six Flags, one of the world’s largest theme park companies, recently announced initiatives to reduce electricity, fuel use, and waste at their amusement parks. The green initiative announcement comes on the heels of Six Flags filing for bankruptcy. The company has requested the protection of Chapter 11 of the United States Bankruptcy Code, while it reorganizes its debt. Six Flags is estimated to be more than $1.8 billion dollars in debt.

In the meantime, the company announced its intention to create various green pilot programs at their twenty parks in Canada, Mexico and the USA including switching vehicles and trains to run on used veggie oil generated in Six Flags kitchens, switching to LED lamps throughout the parks, the installation of low-flow, high efficiency water fixtures, planting drought tolerant plants and groundcover at the parks, and promoting recycling.

Six Flags is also reviewing a solar energy plan for the parks as well. The plan is to use existing available land surrounding various parks and create solar panel farms to supply the parks with renewable energy.

All of the green initiatives, in addition to being easier on the planet, will also result in cost savings for the bankrupt theme park company.
