A new 'bedtime stories' commercial from the UK Department of Energy and Climate Change is under fire for its ‘scary’ depiction of climate change. In the commercial, a father is shown reading a global warming bedtime story to his child. As the father talks about the possible effects of climate change, the story takes a dark turn and depicts some of the unpleasant consequences of global warming including animals starving, flood waters and monsters in the sky.
The advertisement, costing £6 million pounds (US$9.45 million) to make, was created to promote the Department of Energy and Climate Change’s Act on CO2 carbon reduction initiative. However, the BBC News is reporting that the Advertising Standards Authority has received 357 complaints about children being frightened by the advertisement and concerns about whether the science around climate change is accurate in the commercial.
The advertisement is under investigation.
