The death industry, like most industries, has its fair share of waste products. Recycled Coffin Couches were created in response to a surplus of unusable coffins. Due to health and safety laws, funeral homes cannot resell used coffins to the general public as once a body touches the coffin it is considered to be biohazard tissue.
In 2007, Coffin Couches approached funeral directors in Southern California with the idea of recycling the used 18 gauge steel coffins to create one-of-a-kind macabre furniture.
“Each is individually made in the U.S. by artisans,” explains Coffin Couches. “Our customers range from Monster Garage’s Jesse James to LA Ink’s Kat Von D who has one in her L.A. tattoo shop. We offer eternal comfort.”
The company uses three artists, a welder, a painter, and an upholsterer to make each custom coffin couch. The recycled coffin couches can be shipped anywhere in the world.
“No wood products are involved in the process thus making it a truly green product,” explains Coffin Couches.
Prices start at $3,500.
