For some people a chair is just something to sit on, for other people a chair is an opportunity to showcase both sustainability and design savvy. Imagine a living chair lovingly coaxed from a tree or a chair made from cardboard, recycled plastic, keyboards or bicycles. We have compiled a list of our favourite Weird Green Chairs — you’ll never look at the humble chair the same again.
Growing Chair
The Growing Chair by Swiss artist Michel Bussien is an innovative furniture design incorporating nature into our living space. “Growing Chair is an attempt to make trees and plants grow up into chairs that can be harvested and brought straight from “the field” into the living room,” explains the artist. “Fast growing Willow trees are planted together with a Russian vine in a chair shaped miniature greenhouse.”
Cardboard Chair
The Corrugated Chair by Sarah Clement and Michael Wallace from Louisiana State University was one of the winning submissions to the annual Chair Affair Competition. Design submissions had to be made of corrugated board and glue, and were required to elevate a user of an undetermined size off the ground comfortably for an extended period of time.
Keyboard Chair
Italian designers Dante Bonuccelli and Lamm have created an amazing Text-ile Reclining Chair made from discarded laptop keyboards. The Text-ile Chair is constructed from Voice Systems’ discarded keyboards, a system used by individuals with visual disabilities.
Chaise Lawn Chair
Who doesn’t love the feel of soft grass beneath bare feet? Well, designer Deger Cengiz has taken this concept one step further and created the Chaise Lawn Chair, a grass chair that replicates the pleasure of lying on soft grass. The artist describes the Chaise Lawn as “…an alive lounge chair, mobile planter and a human transporter”.
Plastic RD Legs Chair
The latest innovation in eco-furniture from British Cohda Designs is their limited edition RD Legs Chairs hand-woven from 100% recycled domestic plastic waste. Their latest eco-design builds on the early experimental plastic processes developed by Cohda and uses no glues or adhesives. The chair has the added benefit of being able to recycle it again and again.
Autonomous Living Units
Designer Eduardo McIntosh has created Autonomous Living Units to explore concepts of contemporary architecture and the housing crisis. The Autonomous Living Units is designed to have all the comforts of home in a self-contained chair.
Bicycle Chair
Imagine your favourite bicycle reconfigured into a super stylish chair or loveseat. American artist and bike mechanic Andy Gregg, takes old bicycle parts and turns them into stunning furniture. Bike Furniture Designs specializes in contemporary, sleek furniture made primarily from recycled steel and aluminium bicycle rims, handlebars, and frames.
Pookre Tree Chair
Peter Cook and Becky Northey practice the unique art of tree shaping in Australia. Using Wild Plum and Black Cherry trees, they gently and slowly coax out Pooktre - living tree figures, tables and chairs.
Recycled Upholstery Chair
Drop Chairs are made from recycled upholstery material, inner tubes and a stainless steel frame. These innovative eco-chairs are from Norwegian artist and furniture design student, Camilla Hounsell Halvorsen from the Oslo National Academy of the Arts. The Drop Chair’s seat is not permanently fixed to the support frame so the chair seat can be tilted into the desired position by the user. The seat can be removed from the support frame and also used as a cushion.
