Rare Corpse Flower Blooms

E-mail Print

An extremely rare flowering plant named after a phallus and with a fragrance of rotting corpse is currently in bloom in Holland at the Leiden University's botanical gardens.

This is the first time Amorphophallus Titanum has bloomed in Holland in 11 years according to Reuters. The five foot tall plant (1.8 meters), a native of the rainforests of Sumatra Island in Indonesia, will bloom for an estimated two days and experience a considerable growth spurt of its central flower. Amorphophallus Titanum bloom every few years, some bloom every decade.

The blooming of the Amorphophallus Titanum is considered a major event. A bloom at The Huntington Library in San Marino on June 18, 2009 attracted thousands of visitors.

There is a webcam set up at Leiden University.
