Oil Spill in French Park

E-mail Print

A burst underground pipe on Friday (August 7th, 2009) spilled more than 3000m3 (106,000 cu.ft, or 18,870 barrels) of oil over 8100m2 (2 acres) into a natural reserve at the edge of Camargue National Park in the south of France. The underground pipeline is owned and operated by South European Pipeline and supplies refineries in Switzerland, France and Germany.

The 820km² (317 sq.mile) Camargue National Park is famous for its wild horses, bulls and more than 400 species of birds, including the Greater Flamingo. The Camargue Park is one of the few habitats in Europe visited by the flamingos.

A clean up operation is underway.
