The Canadian Omega Garden Carousel hydroponics system, aside from looking very cool, is an ingenious approach to gardening designed to reduce the use of light, energy, water and land.
The plants grow on a carousel that is rotated around LED light sources, yielding more than three to five times the weight of plant per watt of electricity used. The system apparently can produce the same amount of plants in their 150 sq.ft. (13.9m2) system as what would be grown in a 1500 sq.ft.(139m2) greenhouse.
Omega Garden Carousel uses geotropism to capitalize on the natural effects of gravity on the plant growth hormones called Auxins. The Vancouver-based company reports, “…if plants are continually rotated horizontally top to bottom these Auxins are evenly distributed throughout the plant, aiding in plant growth and strength”.
