What started as a 1930s steel structure to carry freight trains has been transformed into New York’s hottest new park - The High Line. Located on Manhattan's West side, the 1.45 mile (2.4km) long elevated park, designed by landscape architects James Corner Field Operations with architects Diller Scofidio + Renfro, runs from Gansevoort Street in the Meatpacking District to 34th Street.
With views of the Hudson River and the city skyline, the park is an example of how cities can revitalize and green defunct urban spaces.
Currently, Section 1 of the High Line park is open, from Gansevoort Street to 20th Street. However, when fully complete, the park will eventually pass through the Meatpacking District, West Chelsea and Clinton/Hell's Kitchen. Access points are located every two to three blocks and many of the access points include elevators.
Section 2 (20th Street to 30th Street) is expected to open in 2010.
Open daily from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.
