In the late 1980s a group of green visionaries got together to build a series of ecological-system domes in the middle of the Arizona desert to house the world’s largest sealed bio-environment experiment.

Constructed at the cost of US$200 million by Space Biosphere Ventures and covering more than 3.15 acres, the Biosphere 2 experiment includes a one million gallon artificial sea, rainforests, grasslands, and mangrove wetlands in five natural biome areas, in addition to living areas and laboratory space.

The environmental experiment allowed for the study and manipulation of the harmony of a closed eco-system, integrating humans, technology and farming with the natural environment.

Unfortunately the experiment was deemed a failure and abandoned. The Biosphere 2 was sold in 2007. Today the site is owned by the University of Arizona and draws people from around the world.

American photographer Noah Sheldon captured the current state of the world’s greatest and most disappointing environmental experiments in a series of stunning photos. See his work here.
