Italian based designer Mattia Casalegno has devised a rather unusual way to get closer to nature with her soil mask “The Open”. Utilizing a wearable chunk of sod, in conjunction with headphones, The Open is a wearable sensorial device that forces the wearer to smell the grass while listening to their breathing.

“The work plays with the Deleuzian notion of "ritornell" (refrain), and the quality of sound to define a territory,” explains Casalegno. The Open inhibits the visual system while enhancing the olfactory via the proximity with soil, highlighting the unstable relationship with environment.
