Are scientists ready to give up on the future of coral reefs? It appears that many top ocean scientists have decided to switch from thinking about how to save coral and are now focusing on how to preserve coral for future generations.
The effects of climate change are increasing so quickly that scientists acknowledge they are losing the fight to save coral and must start to look at alternatives. The plan is to create coral ‘banks’ where samples of the world’s corals are frozen in liquid nitrogen.
''Well it's the last ditch effort to save biodiversity from the reefs which are extremely diverse systems," said Simon Harding from the Zoological Society of London in a BBC News article.
The decision comes on the heels of a recent UK study by Andrew Brierley of St. Andrews University, that shows coral reefs may collapse as early as 2040.
