Small soup-can sized information gathering robots are set to swarm the oceans. Created by the Scripps Institution of Oceanography with US$2.5 million dollars in funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF), the autonomous underwater explorers (AUEs) will help provide information on everything from small ocean-dwelling organisms to the oceans’ currents.
By gathering information on localized currents, temperature, salinity, pressure and biological properties, AUEs will offer new and valuable information about a range of ocean phenomena, according to a recent NSF statement. The robot swarms can also be deployed to provide monitor oil spills, dead zones, acidification and algae blooms.
