A new species of crab was recently discovered off the coast of southern Taiwan and then promptly died – possibly due to the pollution leaking from a shipwreck.
The two female polka-dotted strawberry crabs, discovered by National Taiwan Ocean University professor Ho Ping-ho off the coast of Kenting National Park, are similar to crabs found in the waters off Hawaii and Polynesia, though the strawberry crabs distinct clam-shaped shell makes them a unique find.
Unfortunately, one crab was dead upon discovery and the other died shortly thereafter. Both crustacean carcasses have been made into specimens.
