The Growing Chair by Swiss artist Michel Bussien is an innovative furniture design incorporating nature into our living space. “Growing Chair is an attempt to make trees and plants grow up into chairs that can be harvested and brought straight from “the field” into the living room,” explains artist Michel Bussien. “Fast growing Willow trees are planted together with a Russian vine in a chair shaped miniature greenhouse.”
The tree shaped greenhouse allows the Willow trees to form around the chairs supporting structure and the vine keeps the structure together.
“Once the chair has grown strong enough the greenhouse is snapped open and removed and the chair is cut loose at its ankles just above the soil,” explains the artist. “Let us use the complexity of living nature and include it in our creations.”
