Condoms Save Forests

Although you may not directly link condom use to deforestation, a recent move by the Brazilian government to switch to sustainably farmed rubber for their country’s condoms is going to have a significant impact on the rainforest.

The Brazilian government, the largest buyer of condoms in the world with annual imports of over one billion condoms, purchases and distributes condoms to help reduce the spread of HIV/AIDS, and provides them to low income families as a form of birth control.

The new program utilizing sustainably grown and harvested latex from tropical trees will provide an income to hundreds of families while ensuring that the tropical forests are protected.
