Chinese-born, American-based engineer and furniture designer Hongtao Zhou’s latest installation raises awareness about utilizing unwanted stumps in our gardens and outdoor environments.

“Humans cut about 30 millions trees every day and leave tree stumps everywhere from rain forests to urban areas,” explains the artist. “The wood industry has not found it valuable to use these stumps and residencies have a hard time digging them out from their yards.”

The ingenious design solution, (created from scrap wood as an example), is transforming the unwanted stump into an outdoor lounge chair complete with an enormous wooden axe as the backrest and a second stump as a footstool.
“I hope this piece inspires the public to use stumps as functional objects and educational sculptures,” explains Zhou.
The Axe and Stump Lounge Chair is currently installed at the Vermont Studio Center.
