Eco-Friendly Water Filtration

Montreal designer Manual Desrochers has created an elegant well-designed, eco-friendly water filtration system made from porcelain and hand-blown glass – the Ovopur.

Prompted by an appreciation of water, the 34-year designer created the amazingly simple and effective water filtration system in the environmental-friendly, egg-shaped Ovopur, demonstrating that all the plastic accruements of water filtration are completely unnecessary.

Using a four-stage filtration system, the Ovopur filters water through reusable glass filters (filled with activated carbon, a zinc and copper alloy, quartz, and porous ceramic beads), into an 11 litre (2.9 US gallon), chemical and lead-free porcelain reservoir that keeps the water cool without the need for electricity.

The Ovopur takes between 20-30 minutes to filter 11 litres of water and each filter cartridge can filter an estimated 2,000 litres (528 US gallons) of water before it needs to be changed. Unlike other water purification systems where plastic filters end up in the landfill, every four months Ovopur users remove the glass filter and return it to the company, via a prepaid envelope, in exchange for a new filter. The company then recycles the filters for reuse.

Ovopur estimated cost is CAN$689 (US$656, €465).
