One of the most polluted rivers in the world briefly turned green on World Water Day. Argentinean artist Nicolas Garcia Uriburu, in conjunction with Greenpeace Argentina, ‘painted’ Buenos Aires' Riachuelo River green. The action was designed to raise awareness about the government’s lack of action against water pollution.

"I've been trying to alarm people against the contamination of rivers and oceans for 40 years, and it's through my artistic performances that I've turned my work into a sort of alert,” explained the artist.

Using a water-soluble liquid that produces a green fluorescent color when it comes in contact with alkaline solutions, the artist’s action made headlines around the world for his most recent coloration.

Garcia Uriburu has colored the Fontaine du Louvre in Paris, the Grand Canal in Venice, the Fontaine du Soleil in Nice and the Port of Antwerp in Belgium.
