With winter coming and longer nights ahead of us – now is a good time to check out a few of the hot environmental movies on the market. Our eco-video list is by no means complete, but it does include our favourite green titles to get you up to speed on the major issues currently facing the planet.

Of course, we included the top three climate change films – An Inconvenient Truth, Everything’s Cool and The 11th Hour. However, climate change is not the only ‘issue’ the world needs to worry about. The planet is headed for major oil and water crises so we included the new Sam Bozzo film – Blue Gold: World Water Wars and to explain what peak oil is, we threw in A Crude Awakening.

Food security is also an issue of global concern so we added the eerily beautiful European film - Our Daily Bread - to highlight the state of the world’s food systems. Lastly, we just had to include the old favourite – Who Killed The Electric Car? – kind of like Titanic – we know the ending but it is still a good DVD for a dark winter’s night.

An Inconvenient Truth by the Goracle. Well we all might be getting a bit sick of hearing about this oldie, but it sure rocked the world and galvanized many people to get off their asses and get involved in mitigating climate change. If you are looking for one film to watch about global warming – this is the one. http://www.climatecrisis.net/

Everything’s Cool: A Toxic Comedy About Global Warming is a great film that does a lot to further public discourse about climate change. In addition to the more serious stuff included in the film, there are a lot of funny film moments, and some very inspirational ones as well. http://www.everythingscool.org/

The 11th Hour produced by Leonardo DiCaprio. The 11th Hour explores how the planet has been pushed to the very edge, and what we need to do to save it. World-renowned scientists and environmentalists featured in the film include Wade Davis, David Suzuki, Paul Hawken, William McDonough and Mikhail Gorbachev. http://11thhouraction.com/seethefilm

Blue Gold: World Water Wars by Sam Bozzo. This definitive guide to the world water crisis is the best water rights film on the market. Blue Gold pulls no punches in letting us know what are the major issues around the world’s water supplies. A must see film for every person on the planet. http://www.bluegold-worldwaterwars.com/

A Crude Awakening: After The Oil Crash highlights that we have already reached peak oil supply and that from here on in, the world can no longer keep up with current demands of oil consumption. Currently the world is devouring more than 20-30 billion barrels of oil a year and there is no available technology that can replace the energy we extract from oil. http://www.oilcrashmovie.com/

Our Daily Bread is a documentary look at the European system of industrialized food production. Told without words or commentary, Austrian filmmaker Nikolaus Geyrhalter takes the viewer to an almost apocalyptic world of food production. A place where humans have lost their humanity and connection to the food we consume. http://www.ourdailybread.at/

Who Killed The Electric Car? Well, I think we all know the answer - the petroleum companies and General Motors. This compelling documentary explores the burning question of – why did GM try to secretly crush its fleet of EV1 electric vehicles out in the Arizona desert? http://www.whokilledtheelectriccar.com/
