Infamous British graffiti artist – Banksy – famous for his scathing social commentary graffiti and elusive identity – has a new art exhibit making waves in New York City called The Village Pet Store and Charcoal Grill. In his latest evocative work, which is making international headlines, he attacks the way our society treats animals with a fake pet store exhibit stocked with animatronic creatures and figures. His exhibit shows a rabbit testing cosmetics on itself, chicken McNuggets with legs dipping themselves in sauce, a withered and fatigued bird in a cage, two hotdogs having sex and a monkey watching TV with headphones on.
The exhibit is set up like a pet store and questions “...our relationship with animals and the ethics and sustainability of factory farming”. The BBC News reports that Banksy explained the exhibit with “New Yorkers don't care about art, they care about pets. So I'm exhibiting them instead”. The New York Times reported that the exhibit took several weeks to prepare, and like all Banksy's work, there was no opening party, no guest-list and no complimentary drinks.
The Village Pet Store and Charcoal Grill exhibit is located in Greenwich Village, No. 89, Seventh Avenue South, New York City. Open 10am to midnight daily until October 31st.
