The hot news sweeping the environmental world is that Brita is poised to make a major announcement about implementing a North American filter recycling program. Since 1992, Brita has run a recycling program for European pitcher filters, but not so in North America.
Take Back The Filter, an activist pressure group, has been campaigning Clorox (maker of Brita products) to establish a filter recycling program in North America. Take Back The Filter reports that Brita has the #1 market share of pour-through filter cartridges in the U.S. and Canada. It's the #1 faucet-mount filter in Canada and the #2 faucet-mount filter in the U.S. No figures available on exactly how many Brita filters have ended up in North American landfills.
The Take Back The Filter website is now carrying the following news:
The Take Back The Filter campaign received a call from Brita brand manager Drew McGowan yesterday alerting us that Brita will indeed begin taking back and recycling pitcher filters beginning in January! Full details on the plan will be released on Tuesday. Please visit this site again Tuesday to learn where you'll be able to take your filters to be recycled as well as how they will be recycled.
Stay tuned for information about Brita’s new North American filter recycling programs.
