The Canadian Biotechnology Action Network (CBAN) is asking for North American individuals and organizations to endorse the No to GE Alfalfa Campaign and show their opposition to the introduction of genetically engineered (GE) alfalfa in North America. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) is currently accepting input on GE alfalfa until March 3, 2010 and there are plans to also bring GE alfalfa to Canada.

“A ruling in the US that prohibits the planting of GM alfalfa in that country may soon be overturned,” explains CBAN. “The U.S. Department of Agriculture has released its draft Environmental Impact Statement on GE alfalfa and is accepting comments until the end of the day on March 3, 2010.”

More information from CBAN:

The Canadian Government has approved Monsanto’s GM (genetically modified) herbicide resistant (Roundup Ready) Alfalfa for human consumption and environmental release but Monsanto has not yet applied for variety registration. This step is needed before the crop can be commercially grown in Canada.

The commercialization of genetically modified alfalfa — GM alfalfa — planned by Monsanto and Forage Genetics International, would have a severe, negative impact on Canadian agriculture, markets, and our environment. A united effort by agriculture producer groups, consumer and environmental organizations, as well as concerned individuals, will prevent this from happening.

There are a lot of opportunities at the CBAN website for North Americans to get involved including petitions, form letters, USDA links, etc. Take a moment to say NO TO GMOs!
