American First Lady Michelle Obama recently hosted a harvest party with the students from Bancroft Elementary School to celebrate the bounty from the recently planted White House garden. The 5th graders helped create and plant the organic kitchen garden back in March.
As part of their visit, the students prepared a healthy meal with produce from the garden. The kids harvested lettuce and sugar snap peas then cooked a delicious lunch consisting of salad, baked chicken and brown rice.
The meal was served on paper plates, with styrofoam cups and disposable cutlery, sending a mixed message to the young kids about sustainability. The White House could have opted to serve the kids their organic meal on washable plates with real cutlery and/or on biodegradable and compostable plates and utensils.
Teaching kids about healthy sustainable eating includes presenting food in a manner that reinforces the importance of slow eating rather than perpetuating a fast food disposable culture.
The White House reports that more than 90 pounds of produce has been harvested from the garden with the majority of it donated to local soup kitchens.
