Healthy Eating Advocacy

Bright red apple

The food movement has exploded into mainstream consciousness lately - with everyone talking about food security, food miles and the 'SUV Diet'. Now more than ever, you are what you eat and our choices have serious environmental and political ramifications. To help you make the transition to sustainable and tastier eating, we have gathering some of our favorite healthy food advocacy organizations. Enjoy!

Deconstructing Dinner is a popular Kootenay Co-Op radio show covering everything you ever wanted to know about food (and a few things you would probably rather not know...) with host Adhan Shaikh. http://kootenaycoopradio.com/deconstructingdinner/

The Eat Well Guide helps individuals find healthy, sustainable food options in the USA and Canada through a directory of 9,000 farms, stores and restaurants. http://www.eatwellguide.org

Farm Folk/City Folk is an innovative non-profit that works to create a sustainable food network in western Canada. http://www.ffcf.bc.ca/

Slow Food is an international movement to reconnect with food. The core beliefs behind the Slow Food Movement are that food should taste good, be produced in a manner that does not harm the environment, animal welfare or health, and food growers have the right to fair compensation for their work. http://www.slowfood.com

The 100 Mile Diet Society works to raise awareness about the need to eat locally and avoid what founders Alisa Smith and James MacKinnon dubbed the 'SUV Diet' - a diet where most ingredients on a typical North American plate have traveled more than 1,500 kms. http://www.100milediet.org/

Don't let the name fool you, the Toronto Vegetarian Association, is a great resource for information on the environment, health, animals and fine green cuisine. http://www.veg.ca/
