Trading Veggies

With the growing season underway in much of the western hemisphere, an innovative new website has come up with a great way to avoid home-grown vegetable and fruit waste – Veggie Trader.

Modelled after classified advertising, Veggie Trader allows gardeners to sell or trade their excess veggies and fruit, or purchase from other people in their community. Brilliant and free.

The website describes the genesis behind the project as; “Veggie Trader is our pilot effort to see if we can help more families eat well, make the most of the environment, and put more backyards to work for the benefit of neighbours, community and country”.

Buying local, or growing your own produce, significantly reduces your carbon footprint. The average North American meal travels 2,400km to get from field to plate and contains ingredients from 5 countries in addition to our own – that is a lot of food miles used to transport food unnecessarily long distances.

Veggie Trader will help to encourage local food production and directly contribute to a reduction in greenhouse gases created from food transport.
