Can you produce meat without cruelty? Swedish industrial designer Richard Hederstierna believes you can. The 27-year-old student at the Lund Institute of Technology recently won the annual Electrolux Design Lab Competition for his Cocoon device that grows meat from heated animal cells without the need for animal slaughter.
The Cocoon differentiates between the types of meat or fish put into the cooker and then the pre-packaged meats are heated to ‘grow’ the meals.
“This will create 100% pure meat without the need for animals to be killed and with no risk of contamination. It will change everything,” explained Hederstierna to the Daily Mail UK. Although no explanation was provided on how the animal cells would be harvested.
