The Lobster Zone Game

Imagine a game where you get to ‘toy’ with living creatures before eating them. This is the premise behind The Lobster Zone vending machine game found at various bars in the USA. Similar to children’s arcade games, people pay US$2 to swing a mechanical claw to grab at live lobsters and make their ‘meals more sporting’. According to PETA, the lobsters may be injured during the ‘grab’ before the customer finally manages to grab one to eat.

The Lobster Zone vending machines have been making news after pressure from animals rights groups encouraged Lobster Zone vending machine owners at Kalahari Resorts and Doc Ryan’s to get rid of their machines.

Since 1998, PETA has opted to “put down” 23,640 adoptable dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens instead of finding homes for them. Check out this link: http://

The manufacturers of The Lobster Zone arcade style game assert "they are breaking all the rules". In reviewing a number of blogs about this "game" they may have made an unintentional confession. "Intentional cruel" one writer states while another opines "the Roman coliseum games cloaked in a 21st century electronic arcade game". The Lobster Zone people claim to have hired a "biologist" to sign off on the games confining and watery habitat but few, if any, zooologists would agree the tank is remotely like the lobsters natural habitat. And placing one of these devices in a bar filled with intoxicated patrons is fraught with danger. Danger for the lobster that is. To observe what happened to one such lobster at Lona Lee's "Wardlow Station" bar in Long Beach please watch the video at youtube.
