A smoked bacon seal loin in a pot reduction will appear on the menu of Canada’s parliamentary restaurant starting this week. The elite Ottawa restaurant is open to politicians, journalists and other government officials.
The seal meat dish is designed to show the Harper government’s support for the continuation of the seal hunt in spite of the European Union’s recent ban on the import of seal products.
"All political parties will have the opportunity to demonstrate to the international community the solidarity of the Canadian Parliament behind those who earn a living from the seal hunt," explained Senator Celine Hervieux-Payette’s office in a statement.
During Canada's annual sea hunt, tens of thousands of baby seals are killed for their skin. The seals, many of whom are only weeks old when they are killed, have their skulls smashed in or are shot at point-blank range by ‘hunters’. The annual ‘hunt’, considered inhumane and antiquated, takes place from March to April each year in Eastern Canada. The clubbing and shooting of seal cubs has generated global outcry, something the Canadian government continues to ignore.
