Growing Miniature Cattle Craze

Miniature cattle.

Miniature cattle are being hailed as one possible solution for a more environmentally conscious approach to supplying North America’s high meat content diet, as the smaller cows require less land and feed. Up to ten small cows can be raised on the same amount of land as one normal sized cow. These diminutive bovines are also growing in appeal as more small-scale farmers look for livestock options for their for urban acreages.

Miniature cattle are typically between 36-46 inches (0.92-1.17m) in height and there are currently more than 26 breeds of miniature cattle recognized by the International Miniature Cattle Breeders Society and Registry.

However, considering that the average American consumes an estimated 30kg (66lbs) of beef per person per year, it will take a heck of a lot of mini cattle to sustain their hearty appetites. Unfortunately, Americans are some of the largest consumers of meat on the planet and also practice some of the cruellest methods of factory farming.
