Japanese scientist Mitsuyuki Ikeda, from the Environmental Assessment Center in Okayama, has created what may seem like a stomach churning alternative to conventional animal-based protein - a meat alternative derived from the protein found in human excrement. In the quest to find protein substitutes that don’t cause animal suffering and are also less resource intensive, scientists are exploring everything from pain-free meat to faux meat alternatives, but Ikeda has created the world’s first human excrement burger and steak products.
The low-in-fat human waste meat substitute is created from recycling protein-abundant sewage sludge. Considered to be very similar to beef in taste, a red dye is also added to make the excrement meat look more familiar and visually appealing.
“To make one excrement burger it is 63% protein, 25% carbohydrates, 3% lipids and 9% minerals,” explains the video.
Mitsuyuki Ikeda does admit that the main obstacle to consuming the artificial meat may be the psychological barrier, but the excrement meat does recycle human waste into an edible resource.
