Even though most people associate juniper berries with gin, the main ingredient in mainstream gin is normally grain (usually rye or wheat). Juniper berries are used to flavour one of the world’s most popular spirits, but in addition to the juniper berries, each gin maker has their own secret ingredients which may include various ‘botanicals’, including anise, cinnamon, cloves, fennel, lemon zest, orange peel, cassia bark, coriander and vanilla beans.
Originating in the 17th century, gin continues to be a favourite ingredient in many popular cocktails like the Martini, Gimlet, Long Island Ice Tea, Gin and Tonic, and the Gin Fizz. However, even though gin is so widely consumed, there are still only a handful of companies making organic gins. We compiled a small list of the world’s organic gin makers.
Bluecoat American Dry Gin
