The Urban Beehaus

The Beehaus is an urban beehive designed to help bring the buzz back to gardens and rooftops. Created by UK-based Omlet, the Beehaus was developed with leading beekeepers to help ensure the bee population thrives.

Made from plastic, the Beehaus is larger than a traditional hive, measuring about 1m wide (3ft 4”) and 0.5m (1ft 8”) high, with enough room for an urban hive to grow. The hive comes with four honey boxes and the company estimates that, with proper care, it is possible to harvest 20kg (44lbs) of honey a year from a Beehaus hive.

The first Beehaus was recently installed on the Natural England’s office roof in London overlooking Westminster Cathedral.

“Bees provide us with honey but also play a vital role in pollinating plants - from farmland crops to trees, flowers and garden vegetables – bringing critical benefits to people and to the natural environment,” explains Dr Tom Tew, Chief Scientist for Natural England. “There is no reason why our towns and cities should exist as wildlife deserts - wildlife can thrive when we design our urban areas with nature in mind and the Beehaus is a great example of how easy it is for anyone to bring the natural world closer to their doorstep.”

The Beehaus costs £465 (US$766).
