Can you imagine living without a refrigerator? This is the question posed by Save Food From The Fridge by Design Academy Eindhoven graduate Jihyun Ryou. The artist believes that we have lost the connection to our food and subsequently have forgotten how to correctly handle and store food.
“Through the research about the current situation of food preservation, I’ve learned that we hand over the responsibility of taking care of food to the technology, refrigerator. We don’t observe the food any more and don’t understand how to treat it,” explains Ryou of her project.
In Save Food From The Fridge, she explores the natural and harmonious relationships that exist between natural storage methods and fruits, vegetables, eggs and spices.
Using ‘knowledge shelves’, coupled with practicality, the artist demonstrates how the natural ethylene gas produced by apples keeps potatoes from sprouting, root vegetables stored vertically keeps them fresh longer, the use of sand controls humidity, and spices remain fresh in rice.
The result is more visually attractive and energy efficient food storage.
