The AUG/Living Goods Program from Greener Gadgets.

Food miles refer to the distance your food travels from farm to plate, with the average ingredient travelling more than 1,500kms (930 miles) to get from the place it was grown to your table. This carbon emission intensive diet is what two Vancouver writers, James MacKinnon and Alisa Smith, authors of the 100 Mile Diet: A Year of Eating Locally, have dubbed the SUV diet.

The AUG/Living Goods Program, a finalist in the Greener Gadgets' competition, is a mobile phone application concept designed to scan food product barcodes and provide all relevant information about the farmer who grew it, where the food came from, whether it is in season, and the distance it travelled from the farm/factory to the store.

The easy to use mobile phone app works to highlight for consumers that they can, as famous foodie Michael Pollan explained ‘…vote with their fork with every purchase’.

Having instant access to the real food story of each product will allow consumers to make more informed and, hopefully, greener choices when choosing their food items.
