Smellfree Compost Bin

Kitchen and yard wastes typically comprise about one third of household garbage,” reports the Victoria Compost Education Center.

Composting reduces waste in the landfill, thus reducing methane production. Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas believed to be 20 times more effective than carbon dioxide at trapping heat in the atmosphere. Often individuals living in urban environments have some reservations about home composting. Perhaps the biggest barrier is the perceived ‘odor’ from the compost bin. Designer Joe Brunton has come up with an innovative solution to composting in the city – the Odorless Compost Bin. He explains that, “…the project’s aim was to encourage people to recycle their own organic waste at home. One reason why this wasn’t happening was because the compost decomposes and creates an unpleasant smell; this is caused by wet compost and high nitrogen and ammonia levels”.

The Odorless Compost Bin uses carbon filters to dry out the waste and lower the nitrogen levels produced by the composting material.  The main body is 300mm high and with the lid the total height is 400mm. The compost bin is designed to easily fit on a kitchen work surface and in a standard dishwasher.
