If mercury is one of the most poisonous substances know to humankind, why do dentists routinely use it to fill our teeth?  We have all heard about the dangers of mercury being released from coal-fired power plants, but what about the mercury that an estimated 50% of North American dentists continue to put into their patients’ mouths?

It’s All in Your Head: The Link Between Mercury Amalgams and Illness by Dr. Hal A. Huggins is an indepth look at the research on mercury toxicity and dental amalgams and clearly shows the link between mercury poisoning and deteriorating health. His groundbreaking book also details the uphill struggle, the judgment, professional penalization, slander and coercion he has experienced in his efforts to inform the public about the dangers of mercury fillings.

“Dr. Hal Huggins has spearheaded what will go down in medical history as one of the most remarkable movements of rebellion against medicine – or in this case dental – tyranny and obstinate pigheadness ever recorded,” writes Robert C. Atkins, in the book’s forward. “And some day, when the rebellion has attained complete success – and it will – we all ought to thank him for it.”

Even though mercury has been used for more than 100 years in dental work, doesn’t mean it is safe, writes Dr. Hal A. Huggins. Considering that dentists place more than 1 million mercury fillings every day and more than 90.2% of the population have documented reactions to mercury, dental patients deserve better information.

The World Health Organization maintains there is no safe level of mercury. Denmark Norway, and Sweden have banned the use of mercury amalgams. Numerous other countries do not allow the use of mercury fillings in young people under the age of 18.

Mercury allergy symptoms have been associated with numerous autoimmune diseases including multiple sclerosis, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Alzheimer’s disease, arthritis, lupus, Addison’s disease, Hodgkin’s disease, and depression. Mercury toxicity or mercury allergy symptoms have long been linked to childhood autism.

“In fact, 5,000 people a month call my office for information on how to find a dentist that believes in toxicity,” explains Huggins. “This is not easy. Today, any dentist who mentions mercury might be a hazard is liable (under the new dentistry commandment of “ethics”) to lose his license.”

After reading It’s All In Your Head (and the growing body of scientific and health data describing mercury amalgams as a cause of concern), it seems like the only safe and sensible thing to do is get the mercury out of your mouth. But before you rush to the nearest dentist it is important to do some (more) reading and research about how to safely remove your amalgam fillings. Methods of mercury filling extractions vary greatly dentist to dentist.

Mercury safe procedures may involve cooling the fillings to reduce mercury vapour, use of a rubber dam and high volume air extraction devices. Some dentists also provide an additional oxygen source during treatment to further minimize mercury vapour inhalation during the removal process.

The good news is most people, with careful and safe removal of their amalgams and by supporting the elimination process through a detoxification or toxin removal program, have shown improvements in their health after amalgam removal.

“Taking out fillings is a necessary first set if one wants to recover from the ravages of mercury toxicity, but it is far from the only step. Nutrition is actually the most important component in restoring your body,” explains Huggins.

It’s All In Your Head is the best book on the market about mercury fillings and how to remove them safely. If you have mercury fillings or know someone who does, make sure they read this book.

There continues to be the controversy over the mercury contained in dental amalgam. As a dentist thornhill, I still support the use dental amalgam as studies have consistently shown that there is no ill effects from the amount of mercury contained in dental amalgam.
