We are often asked what to tell kids about climate change. It isn’t an easy question to answer. On one hand you want to prepare them for the future realities of a changing world, but we really need to avoid giving them nightmares or scaring them into inaction.
Wendy Rosenoff has a simple solution – actually 101 of them. In her new book, Grow Your Own Tree Hugger: 101 Activities to Teach Your Child How to Live Green, the Canadian mother of three and busy environmental educator, shows parents and teachers how to engage children in green solutions while making it a fun and integrative part of everyday life.
Grow Your Own Tree Hugger offers cool eco-projects for kids on pretty much every environmental subject including renewable energy, organic food, fair trade, recycling, chemical free kitchens, etc.
Each project includes step-by-step instructions, an ingredients’ list, a large-size photo of the completed project and two chat point tips to use in discussing the importance of the project. The book is divided into three main sections - Science Projects, Kitchen Projects and Craft Projects.
We loved the wide range of projects including how to make green cleaning products, how to make a worm composter, the solar powered edible pretzel house, tie-dye shirts with vegetable and fruit inks, the egg carton pizza garden and build your own wind farm.
Our only slight criticism of an overall great book is that there appears to be a fair amount of product placement. Although this may just be an author recommending her favorite brands, when so many specific brands are included - chocolates, cake mixes, flours, syrups and even specific fruit leather brands - just to name a few (complete with a three page section where product links are included) then it begins to feel like an advertorial. A disclaimer explains that ‘No one paid to be in this book’.
Parents, teachers and, most importantly, kids will love this fun-filled book. We highly recommend Grow Your Own Tree Hugger as a book to support and teach children how to live in harmony with the environment.
