Dr. Pitcairn’s Complete Guide to Natural Health For Dogs & Cats, currently in its third edition, remains the best animal companion care book on the market.
The various sections devoted to pet food facts (the book is worth the price for this section alone), natural diets, supplements, pet food recipes, alternative therapies and exercise, healthy environments, emotional connections, pet management and coping with an animal death, will teach you everything you need to know about living with your animal companions.
Although there are also some unpleasant realities in Dr. Pitcairn’s Complete Guide to Natural Health For Dogs & Cats that some pet owners might find a bit of a shock. Pet owners will be uncomfortable to learn the food their beloved animal companion is consuming may contain slaughterhouse waste, toxic byproducts from spoiled foodstuffs, non-nutritive fillers, heavy-metal contaminants, sugar, pesticides and herbicides, drug residues, artificial colors, flavors, preservatives, bacteria and fungi containments. Pet foods may contain any of the 4Ds – remnants of animals that were dead, dying, diseased or disabled.
We love, love, love this book and highly recommend it to anyone who has a dog or cat in their life.
However, once pet owners get past some of the more unsavory elements of the pet food business, the rest of the book is devoted to solutions. A large component of the book is divided into handy Quick Reference sections on common pet ailments and their treatments – everything from anal gland problems to warts are covered (anal gland problems in dogs can be treated with the addition of olive oil, flax oil and adequate exercise to ensure a regular bowel movement. Warts, although not easy to treat, can be helped by the homeopathic remedy Thuya (or Thuja) and by applying Vitamin E and Castor oil directly to the warts).
Pet owners will save a lot of money by troubleshooting common aliments at home, cut down on vaccinations and learn how to extend their animal companions’ life by cutting back on industrialized dog foods. Our only complaint is that the authors haven’t written more of these books for other animals.
We love, love, love this book and highly recommend it to anyone who has a dog or cat in their life. If you have a dog or cat companion, you must buy this book.
