Aside from having the awkward distinction of possessing the longest title for an environmental book, Ecoholic has got to be the greatest green book written by a Canadian with actual Canadian facts and figures.
Bloody Bravo!It is not an overstatement to say if you want to buy one green book about Canada, buy this one. Author Adria Vasil has compiled her popular Now Magazine columns into the definitive green guide to Canada. Everything your little Canuck hearts need to know about living more lightly can be found in Ecoholic.
Ecoholic has a similar layout as other green “how to reduce” books —covering the normal range of topics —beauty, clothes, food, kids, home, sports, garden, etc. But what makes Ecoholic stand out is the depth of research into the subject matter. Vasil doesn’t just offer flippant green facts; she offers a detailed look at each of the subject areas. In the A Pound of Cure section, she doesn’t do the usual lament against chemicals (well she also includes this…) and throw out a few facts, rather Vasil looks at several different aspects of the pharmaceutical industry covering how many pills are made, how the medications are not broken down in the body and where they end up (apparently 50-90% of the active ingredients in medications are excreted in our urine and faeces). This is in addition to the information on bug repellent, tobacco use, menstrual products, birth control, sex and condom use (FYI: It is still OK to masturbate. Just turn off the lights). Each of the 12 chapters offers similar detailed info on how to make intelligent choices to green every aspect of your life — from the kids to condoms to ethical investing.
The overview of the big issues, a comprehensive vocabulary list, the province-by-province green resource guide, also helps to set Ecoholic apart from the other familiar tired and true eco-books. Ecoholic will definitely appeal to the thinking Canadian environmentalist.
