Green Roofs: Ecological Design & Construction is a great environmental contribution from the Earth Pledge team. The book showcases the benefits and possible manifestations of green roofing through forty case studies of living roof projects from around the globe. The Green Roofs’ introduction explains how, “a city-wide network of green roofs can result in cooler summer temperatures, contained water runoff, protected wildlife habitat, and an enhanced sense of urban well-being.”
Green Roofs also reaffirms the belief that everyone —from individuals to multi-million dollar corporations— can make a contribution to greening our world. The Gap Corporate headquarters has a living roof and the Ford assembly plant in Ford River Rouge has the largest green roof project in the world. William McDonough explains in the Green Roofs' Foreword that the Ford assembly plant’s green roof is projected to retain 50% of the annual rainfall – 447,000 gallons of water annually — for $10 million less than conventional water treatment systems. Other examples of green roof projects include homes, chiropractor offices, hospitals, schools, churches, recycling plants and garbage treatment centers.
We really liked this book. Perhaps our main criticism is the high-gloss packaging. A book like Green Roofs really should have a more conscientious use of materials.
Executive Director Leslie Hoffman explains in the book preface “Green Roofs: Ecological Design and Construction was created as a resource to showcase, inspire, and guide the creation of environmentally conceived roof gardens”. Green Roofs definitely inspires.
