Everything you ever wanted to know about the humble laundry line can be found in The Clothesline by Irene Rawlings and Andrea Vansteenhouse. Although not a particularly dense subject, the authors manage to successfully evoke the simple nostalgic pleasures of the humble clothesline.

Part history, part poetry, The Clothesline combines the author’s memories, tried and true laundry recipes, plus a touch of whimsy, a dash of nostalgia, and a lot of beautiful photos, with the North American cultural and historical significance of the laundry line. This book could be aptly titled: An Ode To The Clothesline.

The Clothesline makes a great gift and operates as a gentle encouragement to hang out your laundry and take pleasure in the act. Although The Clothesline might have benefited from a more international perspective as, for many cultures around the world, hanging their laundry out is not a nostalgic or romantic choice, but a necessity. Additionally, hanging the laundry out for many people in Western countries, has become a political act in defiance of rules governing against the “Right To Dry”. The clothesline remains the most energy efficient appliance in the household and is another important tool in our arsenal of sustainable living.
