The Diaper Free Baby has got to be one of the sweetest books on the market for parents. Although dealing with a significant environmental issue, author Christine Gross-Loh manages to make the diaper free option look both easy and accessible. No small feat when you consider how indoctrinated most North American parents are into using disposable diapers. Even getting cloth-diaper hippie-mommies to go au natural is a struggle.
The basic premise (and I surmise liberally here) is that all babies practice what is known as ‘Elimination Communication’ (hereby known as EC) to let parents know when they need to go. But the sad fact is we are so programmed into the whole diaper thing that we don’t even notice the signs when our babies need to use the loo. Instead we encourage them to void into diapers that they continue to uncomfortably wear until parents notice the diaper is ‘full’ or ‘wet’. Gross-Loh asserts we are conditioning our children to void in diapers by only changing the diaper after it is soiled.
Toilet independence is something babies can easily adjust to with parents paying loving attention to the signs their wee one needs to go. Common signs include sudden fussiness or squirming, wriggling and kicking, shivering, etc. Signs vary baby to baby, but by paying attention parents can easily recognize the physical cues.
The Diaper Free Baby lays out all the options for fostering EC with baby – from the occasional EC baby to the fully trained EC parent. Even if parents balk at the thought of their baby voiding wildly on shag carpets (does anyone have those anymore?), expensive rugs, good furniture, the reality is that parents around the world are embracing EC with their babies and nobody is reporting a house destroyed by a defecating, urinating baby.
Just in case you have any doubts, included throughout Diaper Free Baby are anecdotal reports from parents who are successfully practicing EC with their children. Parents are finding that following the diaper free philosophy deepens their relationship with the child, babies have much fewer rashes, and they save a lot of money while seriously reducing their environmental footprint.
What are we waiting for?
The Diaper Free Baby is a well-written, beautiful book offering solutions to provide a deeper connection between parents and children and a happy, healthier baby. Oh, did we mention the environmental benefits of raising an EC baby? There is probably nothing more important than cutting out diapers if you want to raise green babies .
