Apollo’s Fire – Igniting America’s Clean Energy Economy provides valuable insight into the positives and negatives of American government’s inaction on climate change and renewable energy in particular. Apollo’s Fire projects a very constructive and positive view on how America can stimulate its economy, raise living standards for millions and possibly help save the planet from disaster in the process. We can all win provided we are willing to share some pain and discomfort in getting things moving.

Authors Jay Inslee (US Congressman) and Bracken Hendricks (Senior Fellow at the Center for American Progress) have clearly illustrated the need for political motivation, economic reform and the resurgence of the American ‘right stuff’ spirit, to tackle climate change head on. They aren’t alone in their vision, being joined by state governors, mayors, entrepreneurs and hardworking Americans all over the country, each doing their utmost to make it happen.

The authors report on how Chicago’s Mayor Daley revitalizing and greening the city with living roofs, energy efficiency vehicles, solar thermal projects, and creating ‘home-grown’ energy from Idaho farmers co-operatives making cellulosic ethanol to start to reduce America’s dependency on foreign oil. The battle between bio-diesel and ethanol being fought by Google and Microsoft billionaires trying their hand at renewable energy, the high-tech and low-tech competition on solar cells and the rapid spread of wind farms. They also tackle existing CO2 hogs, especially the coal industry, some of whom are rushing to build plants to beat a cap and trade system, while others are clamoring for government action now to help them deal with the inevitable future of carbon taxes and trading.

If you need insight into how the dreaded ‘system’ can be a catalyst for healthy change, then you will find it in this informative, thought-provoking and surprisingly alternative ‘mainstream’ book.
