“I figured out that being green can be decidedly chic,” explains author Christie Matheson. “Being green can help you look gorgeous, have a killer wardrobe, feel amazing, travel in style, create a home that’s an oasis, host fun parties, eat incredible food, and drink phenomenal wine”. Sounds like a tall order? Well, Green Chic: Saving The Earth in Style is a perky guide explaining how to go about becoming a tad greener while retaining your sense of unwavering chic. In addition to highlighting the many amazing eco-products on the market, Green Chic also helps readers understand that eco-simple is sexy and chic.

Matheson starts Green Chic with an overview of commonly used eco-terms to get green newbies up to speed on the jargon and then she launches straight into what you can do to make a difference.

“I decided to address things everyone can do, even if you don’t own a home, aren’t planning renovations, and can’t set up systems that enable you to live off alternative energies...,” Matheson explains.

Green Chic is divided into 11 chapters covering everything from Little Green Things (baby steps to greener living) to Hello, Gorgeous (beauty and personal care) to Big Green Things (a little section about the big picture). Each chapter offers detailed research, tips to reduce your ecological footprint, resources and a variety of cost options for making changes.

Many of the changes suggested are practical and don’t involve much compromise in someone’s lifestyle. For example, Matheson advocates for reducing the use of disposable products (did you know that more than 50 million pounds of toothbrushes end up in landfills each year?), eliminating toxic chemical use (many of which are carcinogenic), eating a simpler diet (less meat means less heat explains Professor J. McMichael from Australia National University), and walking more. All are practical and easily obtainable goals to help lighten your ecological load.

We really liked Christie Matheson’s witty and fun writing style. She manages to walk the fine line of making you feel like you have an eco-ally without smothering you with over-familiarity. Oh, did we mention the book is also attractively designed and easy to follow. Green Chic is a great green read.
