Some compare the current environment crisis to Armageddon. Would that be so far off the mark with the disease, climate change, drought, wars, suffering and fear the entire planet is now experiencing? Whether you consider yourself spiritual, or prefer your religion served up a bit more conventionally, you have to admit these are troubled times. Many individuals around the globe are deepening their faith or turning to religion or spiritualism for the first time in their lives.

In a bid to appeal to a new generation and make the more traditional bible more accessible – the Bible Illuminated: The Book, New Testament - is the bible like you have never seen before.

The Book is offered in glossy magazine format, divided into chapters using running text with no verses (as the Bible was originally written). The text includes highlighted passages of importance, quotes and sub-headings to help individuals find and engage with the information.

The ‘magazine cover’ entices readers with main stories: A Good Investment, All Power Comes To An End, Questions About Marriage, If Love Gets Cold, and Eyewitness.

The Book is also peppered with vivid contemporary images linking the bible to modern events. The images of modern events include the shooting at Jackson State College, art provided by Andy Warhol, children with handguns, Satan in a hoodie, a polar bear drowning, a football squad of war amputees, anti-globalization activists, teenagers zoned out at a video game conference, a plastic Virgin Mary, a denuded cat, an oil spill, the flood in New Orleans and a blind Iraqi child.

The images of leaders or saints include modern heroes and heroines such as Bono, Angelina Jolie, Mother Teresa, the Dali Lama, Princess Diana, John Lennon, Martin Luther King, Al Gore and Mahatma Gandhi. The contemporary images operate to make the text more accessible and compelling.

Publisher Förlaget Illuminated, Sweden, AB (Illuminated World) intended this version of The Book for individuals who own a bible, but never read it and for people who don’t have a bible and would never consider picking one up. Their intention is to get people engaged in the Bible again. “The more you know, the more you can participate in discussion about the world, the bigger picture,” writes Dag Söderberg, creator of The Book.

The Book is rather brilliant. The modernizing of the language paired with contemporary imagery is mesmerizing. For individuals who are seeking a more modern relationship with Christianity, this is The Book for you.

The Book: Old Testament is coming in 2009.
