The World of the Polar Bear by world-renowned photographer Norbert Rosing is, what may well be, a beautiful swansong to the polar bears. For more than 20 years, Norbert Rosing has travelled to the west coast of Hudson Bay and has captured the unique world and its inhabitants on film. In The World of the Polar Bear he takes the reader on a visual journey following the life cycle of the polar bear – a cycle intrinsically linked of the melting and freezing of the Arctic ice.
No animal is more iconic to climate change and the melting ice of the Arctic than the polar bear. This reluctant poster child for climate change has been thrust into the international spotlight as emblematic of just what we stand to lose if we don’t quickly reverse the negative effects of climate change.
Over the last 17 years, Rosing has returned to the Churchill area of Canada at least twice a year where he has photographed every type of Arctic creature. “But the polar bear, ever since I first saw one swimming in a northern lake, has become my primary subject. From that first contact I experienced a rush of adrenaline, a heady hybrid of respect and awe that has continued to fuel my passion for Urus maritimus and the northern island it inhabits,” explains Rosing.
Norbert Rosing’s unobtrusive and natural images capture every aspect of the life of a polar bear, with the book divided into four seasons. The polar bear story starts with the birthing den and new springtime polar bear cubs, to the ice break up in the summer when the polar bears move to land, to the animals waiting for the ice to thicken in fall. In winter, when polar bears are at the peak of their yearly activity, Norbert captures images of the bears in their true magnificence.
“Like any other fever, the polar bear bug has a number of symptoms, not the least of which is simple appreciation for the bears. Its lingering effect also includes a deep appreciation for all northern regions…” writes Norbert.
The most beautiful and visually comprehensive polar bear book on the market.
