Colonel Trash Truck: Keeping The Planet Clean and Green, written by Kathleen Crawley and illustrated by Manuel Conde, is a fun kid’s book with a purpose – to teach them to think about trash and recycling.

Colonel Trash Truck strongly believes in his mission of keeping the planet clean and green. He works tirelessly to combat the litterbugs that throw trash where it's not supposed to be,” explains their website. “Along with his Clean and Green Team of garbage trucks, he wants children to help him in his mission.”

The simple story of Colonel Trash Truck, told with humour and rhyme, encourages kids to think about their waste by identifying with the friendly and accessible garbage truck and his army of trash and recycling soldiers.

Trash trucks normally seen as smelly, loud and annoying are made much more friendly through the fun text and bright drawings. The use of humour and some yucky bodily references will also appeal to kids (Wipe up your boogies, Don’t spit your loogies…).

Kids need more books, toys and heroes that demonstrate good environmental practices for the planet. Colonel Trash Truck is a perfect example of the right book at the right time. Most kids are aware of recycling and Colonel Trash Truck offers an eco-hero that they can relate to, someone other than their parents or teachers, who advocates for being kind to the planet.

This fun bright book is an excellent addition to most eco-kid’s libraries. However, I do wish that author Kathleen Crawley had not used the military references for her eco-heroes.

The book is classified as Juvenile Fiction and is recommended for kids 3-6 years of age.
