The Yes Men Fix The World is a hilarious tale of two of the world’s most famous tricksters and performance artists – Andy Bichlbaum and Mike Bonanno (Jacques Servin and Igor Vamos) who spend their spare time making fun of corporations and drawing attention to injustices around the planet.
The two men, armed with cheap suits, wild imaginations, seemingly vast financial resources and balls the sizes of bowling balls, have posed as the top executives of Dow Chemical, Exxon, Halliburton and the American Department of Housing and Urban Development. They have ‘white’ lied their way into business conferences and boardrooms in a series of increasingly outrageous pranks.
The Yes Men Fix The World opens with perhaps their most successful prank when, after creating a fake Dow Chemical website, Bichlbaum was invited onto the BBC News for an interview. During that now infamous interview, Bichlbaum, posing as a top Dow Chemical executive, explained that after nearly 20 years of denial, Dow Chemical had decided to finally clean up the site of the Bhopal disaster, the largest industrial accident in history. Bichlbaum also explained how Dow would set up a US$12 (€8.8) billion fund to compensate the victims. The result of the interview - Dow's stock value loses US$2 (€8.8) billion.
The feature length documentary follows the two men from New Orleans to India to New York City as they work to raise awareness about the corporate greed that is systematically destroying the planet.
Along the way, the men attend a GO-Expo 2007 (Oil and Gas Exposition) conference posing as Exxon executives where they pitch a Vivoleum bio-fuel made from the human flesh of climate change victims. They also attend an insurance conference posing as Halliburton executives where they promote the hyper-expensive and absurd SurvivaBalls - designed to protect upper level managers from the perils of climate change.
The film finishes with the story of how the Yes Men, in conjunction with the Anti-Advertising Agency, printed a million copies of a fake edition of the New York Times filled with all sorts of dream headlines including ‘Iraq War Ends’, ‘George Bush Faces Charges’, ‘Maximum Wage Law Succeeds’ and the tagline ‘All the news we hope to print’.
Both hilarious and inspirational, the film demonstrates just how much two individuals, armed with imagination and courage, can do to change the world.
