Gimme Green: A Documentary About America's Obsession With Lawns is a funny little 27 minute documentary that explores, like the title suggests, our unhealthy obsession with the green tide of destruction – grass. Filmmakers Isaac Brown and Eric Flagg interviewed a bunch of different people to get their take on what the lawn symbolizes – the answers are not particularly pleasant; ‘tidy lawns are symbols of prosperity’; ‘they let you know what sort of person lives in the house’ and ‘what their background is like’.Or at least that’s what some people think.

The ugly side of the lawn culture is grass is America’s biggest irrigated crop. But the bad news doesn’t stop there – lawns cover more than 41 million acres, 30,000 tons of pesticides are used on American lawns each year and every day more than 5000 acres of land is converted into grass. The American lawn is a $40 billion dollar industry.

However, the tide is turning against the green plague. In Las Vegas, where water shortages are becoming a serious issue, now lawn owners are paid US$1 per square foot to remove their grass and replace it with something else; usually plastic astro turf.

Gimme Green is a great film. Lots of shocking statistics (see a few above) and some humorous interviews with various lawn police and yard appreciation award organizations.

Our only criticism is that Gimme Green should have been a feature length film. We were left chanting gimme more!
